Deep Love

Old Bones:

"You know my love for you was deep."

These final words I heard her speak,

then slipped from life into a spell,

but woke again in death to living hell.

Before I left my earthly bride,

our love was envied far and wide.

Now tell me how a bond so true

could change and raze our happiness to ruin?

Deep beneath the tangled roots

I lie in hallowed ground,

but I find no rest while vows of love

have kept me ever bound.

What use is such a promise made

unless one keeps it well beyond the grave?

To you, impartial host of souls,

this deathly tale I will unfold.

Then judge the truth for what it be,

and in the end you'll see why love is deep.

KEEP MY HAND ABOVE YOU

Old Bones:

In the darkness descending through dreams,

it was duty that raised me from sleep.

By the virtue that bound us in life,

I am born in the wake of her cries,

Unaware, by the mewl of her breath,

Unaware, she'll arouse me from death.

And I'll arise to claim what's mine.

Though my heart be still in slumber,

I will find a way to love her

Constance:

Long have I mourned, far more than was due,

refusing to be comforted, lest I should forget you.

My heart is bound with chains unseen,

a slave to a memory I recall now as a dream.

Is there more that I could suffer,

or have i forborn enough?

Shall I learn to seek another?

Who can purge my bitter cup?

Old Bones:

Oh my love,

you promised me that you would never stray,

though death should tear us each the other way.

So here am I, so close to you,

making sure your heart beats true.

Keep my hand above you.

Think of how I loved you.

And if you do, I'll be true,

and no harm will befall you.

Constance:

What can I do to start anew?

What can I say to quell my pain?

Old Bones:

Don't think that I will leave your side.

In all you do, I'll be by your side watching over you.

Remember, my wistful bride,

I love you because you're mine.

You may never see me,

but darling believe me, I'm with you.

Old Bones/Constance:

Haste the sunshine, darling.

Can't you see I'm starving?

For your love, it's enough

Old Bones:

To get these chains off me!

FRIEDRICH’S GROOVE

Friedrich:

Hey little girl!

Won’t you help me to sleep?

I got bad, bad dreams.

They just won't let me be.

I've done all that I can!

But I'm just a poor, poor man!

Who needs a helping hand, yeahhh!

Florence:

Whooaaaaahhhhhhh!

I know you can see me.

I can tell by your lips.

Couth and curled, a little fool of grin.

What can I do more than what I've done?

I give you my bread and my bed and my shelter

in the name of love

Friedrich:

You know what I am

You know where I've been

You know what I cost

It's the eye of the blind

Florence/Friedrich:

And the heart of the fool!

Florence:

All I ask is love!

Friedrich:

Love? What is love?

Aren't we having fun?

I’ll be your little fool

You'll be my number one

Florence:

Go ahead and play your game

If you don't mind the shame

But at the end of the day, yeahhhh!

You're mine!

And I’m yours.

WHO WE ARE

Florence:

Do you think any of them would not see through you?

Would they see beyond the thief and the voyeur like I do?

What if they saw what you see when you sleep?

What if they knew the truth?

You dream of blood on your hands

And I know because I dream it too.

You can turn away my love, my sin,

but in my bed you'll stay.

It's just who we are and we'll never change.

You don't have to call it love

but you and me we're the same.

It's just who we are.

Every morn before my eyes awake,

through the black i see much brighter days.

Two brigands there, oh god, we seem so young.

You take my hand, we roll out just for fun.

We were all that we wanted.

We were all that we knew

that there’d be trouble on ahead.

We didn’t know our paths would cross the dead.

It’s not what we wanted.

But it’s who we are!

Who we are!

What’s done is done, the past we can’t remake!

I live with it, the same as you, always!

I’d kill for you, I would not hesitate!

I’d break the very chains of heaven’s gate!

It’s who we are!

I don’t believe in love

Friedrich:

I don't believe in love,

And love don't believe in me.

I gotta live while I can.

I don't know how long I'll be free.

No I don't believe in love,

I just believe in what comes easy.

Constance:

If you're as free as you say, why don't you fly away?

If you're a happy soul, why do you seem so low?

Though loving is akin to loss,

your freedom is a noble cost for such a treasure.

Friedrich:

My lady, please don't leave.

Your candor troubles me.

Tell me what else you perceive?

Constance:

I see a hardened man, who tries to hide his past.

I see you've been hurt before,

That much is plain and sure.

You think you're the only one?

I think you do believe in love,

you just need to free your heart and try again.

Friedrich:

How can you be so bold?

Constance:

No one's heart is so cold!

Friedrich:

Can love really absolve my sins?

Constance:

Love can do anything

Friedrich:

Could love be so blind?

Constance:

I don't care what you've done!

Friedrich:

Could I really start again?

Constance:

Just don't give up on love.

Friedrich:

It's been a long long time

since I opened this heart of mine.

Is it worth the risk of being hurt again?

I s'pose I do believe in love,

but it's gonna take an awful lot to save me.

the well

Constance:

Heaven help me,

I’ve been lost for so long.

I’ve forgotten what home is.

Send me something,

someone mad about me,

For I’m dying to be loved.

Florence:

What do they say about a well?

A place to cast your fortune,

A dream from the bottom,

sinking down.

Constance:

I catch a glimpse my reflection,

down there looking solemn.

She has a secret in her hand,

reaching out.

Florence:

It’s just an arms length of…

Just one more step into the…

If lean I know I’ll fall.

Is that so wrong?

Constance:

In the dark behind my eyes

I see right through my disguise.

If there’s a joy that’s meant to be,

Florence:

Then why not me?

Constance:

Heaven help me, I’ve been lost for so long.

I’ve forgotten what home is. (Florence: It’s who we are…)

Constance:

Send me something,

Someone mad about me. (Florence: It’s who we are…)

Constance:

For I’m dying to be…

Florence:

Then why not me?

Constance/Florence:

It’s been comin’ about!

This thing deep inside, I’ve tried to tear it out!

When my scream stops to breathe, I try to push it down!

She says “why not me?”

I’m going to let it out!

The dreams that I dream

I deserve them now!

The wall in the way, I can break it down!

The girl in the well, she is reaching out!

This thing deep inside, I’ve tried to tear it out!

When my scream stops to breathe, I try to push it down!

She says “why not me?”

I’m going to let it out!

The dreams that I dream, I deserve them now!

The wall in the way, I can break it down!

The girl in the well, she is reaching out!

is it too late?

Friedrich:

I can't be sure why,

But somehow now I feel like I could fly.

Is it fate that I should be satisfied

by something I thought was just a lie?

Is it love, that's come to finally free me

from these nightmares that have kept me so ashamed?

I want her, but I wonder

Is it too late for my soul to change?

Am I mad?

Friedrich:

There's something 'bout today,

I think there maybe something 'bout this place.

Through the night I wandered helplessly afraid

of what this morning I would say when I saw her face.

What a difference a moment makes!

In the moment that you came, my past it falls away.

There's something 'bout the way

my heart pulses when I wonder if it's fate

that has shown me how with you I might be saved

and I was hoping that you just might feel the same.

Constance:

For so long, I've been so lonely,

but now so clearly I can see

you're here to set me free.

Friedrich/Constance:

Am I mad to even dream it?

A light in the dark.

I've been searching through the vastness

of night and now a spark.

Am I mad to believe it?

Everything has changed.

The world has all revolved.

Your touch is of the only thing I'm sure.

Constance:

I tremble at your touch, yet it's you who turns away.

Friedrich:

I'm just a shade of the truth in your heart that I dare replace.

Why don't you see me for the blight I am?

Constance:

I see you for the man you want to be.

Friedrich/Constance:

Am I mad to even dream it?

A light in the dark.

I've been searching through the vastness

of night and now a spark.

Am I mad to believe it?

Everything has changed.

The world has all revolved.

Your touch is of the only thing I'm sure.

all for love

Florence:

What have we here, my darling?

What a precious little thing.

A little smile and you're falling,

forgetting me all the while.

The night has changed,

but I know you're still the same.

Does she know who you are? Who we are?

What a fool!

I waited all the night,

but my bed stayed cold.

Why can't you see through her lies?

How could she truly want a man like you?

Friedrich:

The night has changed and I'll never be the same.

You can say what you will, but it's love.

Florence:

What a fool!

How long will you be pretending?

When will your little game be through?

I will go on always waiting, waiting for you!

Little girl, devious child,

marauding hands, a crooked smile.

I'll watch the sky and wait for rain

to wash away your wicked game

and I'll be there when thunder growls.

You bring him pain, I'll put you down!

And I'll be there, when you're undone!

All for you, all for love!

All for love! All for love! All for love!

surely reclaimed

Friedrich:

I used to walk a crooked road.

I didn't know where I was going.

I used to follow gleaming gold.

I put my trust in carnal notion.

I feel the changes in the air, and I'm scared.

Oh god, I have wasted my life doing wrong,

when I should have done right.

And I'm sure, if you gave me a sign,

your hand and my heart would align.

I looked for comfort in the sky,

and wondered why my heart was hollow.

A million stars seduced my eyes.

How could I know which one to follow?

The fog is lifted from my eyes and I see.

My love, I must follow your light by day

and your shadow by night.

And I know, if you're true to your name,

my soul would be surely reclaimed!

Would be surely reclaimed!

how it feels

Friedrich:

I feel your heartbeat close to mine

and I'm happier each time

I see your gentle eyes

find their way deep into mine.

Friedrich/Constance:

If this is how it feels then I

never want to leave your side.

Your hand fits perfectly in mine

and time will barely pass as I

find your lips flush against mine

and I'm much more yours than mine.

If this is how it feels to die,

then I will love you all my life!

Friedrich:

I’ll take the world and put it in my hands!

Constance:

I'll be the sky and you be the sand!

Friedrich:

And we'll be

Friedrich/Constance:

Forever we'll be!

If this is how it feels, then I

never want to leave your side!

If this is how it feels to die,

then I will love you all my life!

Oooooohhhh.

love’s bitter reproach

Old Bones:

My love, how could you soon forget your promises?

Sweet love, our love grows cold

as though you slay it daily.

Constance:

My love, do my sore eyes deceive my mind this evening?

Sweet love, why should i deserve this awful greeting?

Old Bones:

My love, it's not your eyes that fail you!

Sweet love, your very heart betrays you!

And what use am I, so indentured,

if your heart remains untrue?

What a shame that I should lose my bride!

After everything you put me through!

Now that the sun has sanctified our love,

still in the night, will you turn from me in spite

of every vow you made?

Constance:

Oh darling, I fear I don't see clear!

Lately I've grown so incurably distressed!

But you're here now, and I remember our vows.

Stay with me, love! And I will never stray!

Friedrich:

Don't fear, dear,

what the future may hold!

Just stay near, and forget all the old!

I know you're burning and churning inside.

But don't fear, dear! Constance, be mine!

Constance, be mine! Constance, be mine!

Old Bones:

You know my love for you was deep, (Friedrich: Constance, be mine!)

and silent as the peace I keep.

Beneath a world of broken dreams, (Friedrich: Constance, be mine!)

I reach for you bereaving and unseen!

Below the dying light of day, (Friedrich: Constance, be mine!)

I wander silent as the grave. (Constance: Ahhhh!)

Grieving for the love I knew, (Friedrich: Constance, be mine!) (Constance: Ahhhh!)

before the darkness swindled me of you!

I swear by the sky, if you don't change your mind!

I swear by the stars, if you don't turn your heart!

I swear by my grave, if you can’t hide my shame,

he'll have hell to pay!

Now that you know whose you are,

now that you've seen me and tasted my anger,

now that you're scared for his life,

I pray be wise, and mind your lies.

Mind your lies.
